TASMANIA ASSAULT In 2016, the number of Assault victims recorded in Tasmania increased by less than 1% (12 victims), from 2,932 victims in 2015 to 2,944 victims. Female victims accounted for 51% of victims of assault (1,513 victims). (Tables 6 & 7) Just over a quarter (26%) of all Assault victims were aged between 25 and 34 years, followed by 21% for victims aged 35 to 44 (617 victims). (Table 7) The majority of victims (72%) knew their offender (2,104 victims). The proportion of Male victims assaulted by a stranger (39%) was over three times higher than the proportion for female victims (12%). (Tables 12 & 13) Assault victimisation was most commonly experienced at a dwelling (46% or 1,358 victims). One in five Assaults occurred on a street, or footpath (586 victims). Around a third of these involved the use of either a knife (24% or 116 victims) or a bat, bar, or club (11% or 55 victims). (Table 9) SEXUAL ASSAULT In 2016, there were 213 victims of Sexual assault which represented an increase of 15% from 186 victims in 2015. (Table 6) Females accounted for 88% of all Sexual assault victims recorded in Tasmania (188 victims), which was the largest proportion of female victims of Sexual assault across all states and territories. Just under a quarter (24%) of all Sexual assault victims were aged between 15 and 19 years (52 victims). (Table 7) The majority (86%) of victims knew their offender (183 victims), with 61% of these experiencing victimisation by a non-family member (111 victims). (Table 11) Over three-quarters (76%) of Sexual assault victims reported that the incident occurred at a residential location (161 victims). (Table 8) ROBBERY In 2016, the number of victims of Robbery recorded in Tasmania decreased by 10%; from 97 victims in 2015 to 87 victims. The majority (55%) of these involved the use of a weapon (48 victims), including a knife (21 victims). (Table 6 & 9) PROPERTY CRIME Between 2015 and 2016, the number of victims of all property crime, in scope of the collection, decreased in Tasmania. The largest decline occurred amongst victims of Unlawful entry with intent which decreased by (22% or 858 victims) to 3,008 victims. This is the lowest number of victims of these offences recorded since the beginning of the time series in 2010. (Table 6) The number of victims of Motor vehicle theft declined by 6% from 1,262 victims in 2015 to 1,186 victims in 2016. Retail locations accounted for 45% of Other thefts (3,214 victims). This was the equal second highest proportion of thefts from this location across the states and territories, the largest was in South Australia.
